Black Girl Sunscreen

Packaging Design, Brand Development

Black Girl Sunscreen is a skincare brand created to rethink sun protection for dark skin. Founded with a focus on the needs of Black women, the brand challenged a category where traditional sunscreens often left behind an unwanted white cast. More than sunscreen, Black Girl Sunscreen represents confidence, visibility, and a product made with its community at the center.

Mission

The goal was to develop a brand and packaging system that could communicate both premium skincare and Black empowerment. The challenge was to create an identity that felt elevated and luxurious without losing the directness and cultural significance of the Black Girl Sunscreen name. The packaging needed to stand confidently on shelf, differentiate itself from conventional sunscreen brands, and immediately communicate who the product was created for.

Solution & Process

We built the identity around restraint, confidence, and the power of the name itself. A minimal black and gold visual system gave the brand a premium presence while allowing Black Girl Sunscreen to remain the hero. Rather than overcrowding the packaging with graphics or messaging, we created a clean, sophisticated design that lets the product's purpose speak for itself. The result is a brand that feels luxurious and unmistakably its own, celebrating Black identity while bringing a more elevated point of view to the sunscreen category.
